This category celebrates the innovative student housing project that has most successfully incorporated sustainability throughout its design, construction and operation, paving the way for next generation living.
As the first new building in Portugal to achieve BREEAM Outstanding and EPC ‘A’, together with Fitwel 3* and WiredScore Platinum ratings, Amro Porto, our debut project in Portugal, has set a new benchmark for the living sector.
Amro Porto demonstrates how alignment with the NZC definition can be achieved by incorporating sustainability from the very start of the design process. This requires the entire team, from design to contractors to facility managers, to work together holistically right through to operation and beyond.
As with all our projects, form factor, thermal bridging, optimisation of glazing and reduction of air permeability took precedence before any mechanical system was even contemplated.
We managed to achieve a 39% reduction in predicted operational energy between the design and construction phases, because our iterative approach means we never stop looking for improvements and only work with suppliers and contractor who share our vision and can provide the flexibility needed to achieve it.
Our thanks go to all those who joined us on this journey, including our valued partners IP Investment Management and Heed Capital, along with Ferriera Build Power, Enescoord, Mace, SLRR Architects, Sousa Marques Eng., Niluft Engineering and AZOR furniture. We also congratulate the entire Amro Iberia team, particularly Development Director Juan Carlos Sanz, who was responsible for this project, and ESG & Sustainability Director Elisabetta Li Destri, who worked closely alongside him.
Luis López-Quiñones, Amro Managing Director Co-Head of Iberia, commented: “I am honoured to collect this award for the second time on behalf of the Amro Iberia team. Sustainability is the cornerstone of our investment strategy and we are delighted that Amro Porto is achieving the wider recognition it deserves.”
