The UKGBC has mobilised a cross-industry team of 70+ experts to accelerate action on tackling embodied carbon and ensuring its measurement and reporting rapidly becomes common practice across the real estate sector.

Despite being a significant source of carbon emissions in the UK, embodied carbon is currently unregulated. Yet the consistent measurement and reporting of embodied carbon is critical to ensure meaningful progress towards our net zero goals. The UKGBC is addressing this challenge by improving industry understanding and ability to measure and report on embodied carbon, aiming to embed this practice within the wider industry.

The Task Group comprises experts from across the built environment, ranging from developers and suppliers to academia. Working with the Group over the coming months, UKGBC will develop two crucial guidance documents due for publication this autumn:

  • Targeted at practitioners across the industry, the first document will provide insight into the development and use of embodied carbon data, along with specific guidance to help Life Cycle Assessment teams improve the reliability, transparency and consistency of their results.
  • The second publication will guide sustainability leadership teams to align their organisation’s Scope 3 reporting with embodied carbon calculations and increase understanding of how the two methods can complement each other.
